About this Item

Early edition, possibly the first: Irving's collected letters and the standard life of the popular author, written by his appointed biographer: his nephew Pierre M. Irving. Much here is of interest with respect to the arts of the time (particularly theater, of which Irving was fond, and literature). The volumes open with steel-engraved frontispieces depicting Irving at different stages of his life; the set closes with an index compiled by Samuel Austin Allibone, of bibliographic fame. As BAL notes, "the publication history of this book is involved"; Putnam produced five different editions in the year of the work's original appearance, and it is unclear which has priority. This is the "National Edition," in the publisher's green cloth. 8vo. 4 vols. I: Frontis., 463, [1] pp. II: Frontis., 492 pp. III: Frontis., 403, [1] pp. (skips 11/12). IV: Frontis., 450 pp. BAL 10198. Publisher's green textured cloth, spines with decorative gilt-stamped title; corners and spine extremities rubbed, cloth with a few small spots of discoloration. Bindings cocked, hinges (inside) tender. Ex?social club library: Paper shelving labels on spines, 19th-century bookplates, call number on endpapers, rubber-stamp on title-page and several others in each volume (some of these offsetting to leaf opposite). In several volumes, old inscriptions on fly-leaves with paper slips pasted over; vol. II with some leaves separating, last leaf with tear from inner margin; vols. III and IV with frontispieces among leaves rubber-stamped. Occasional light spots and small edge chips throughout. Bookseller Inventory # 29159
