Our copy is complete and compares with Rothschild, Volume II, 1970.Sterne (1713-1768), an English author born in Ireland, is considered one of the major novelists of the eighteenth century. This work quickly made him a celebrity. He led a dissolute life and was plagued by ill health. Tristan Shandy is a parody of a novel, a hodgepodge of character sketches, blank pages, dramatic action, and transposed chapters. It is witty, satiric, sentimental, knowledgeable and obscene. It was denounced on moral and literary grounds by Johnson, Walpole, and others, and it has come to be seen as one of the greatest comic novels in English, as well as a forerunner for many modern narrative devices. FIRST EDITION OF VOLS. 3-9; SECOND EDITION OF VOLS. 1 & 2. Bookseller Inventory # 12947
