About this Item

Attractively produced set of Johnson's enduring Lives, originally published as Prefaces, Biographical and Critical, to the Works of the English Poets. Though some of the subjects (selected by the booksellers who commissioned the first edition) are all but unknown today, Johnson's work still stands as a landmark of literary criticism. Binding: Tree calf, spines with multiple gilt fillets and gilt-stamped floral devices in compartments, board edges with gilt rolls, page edges speckled in brown. 8vo. I: vii, [1 (blank)], 460 pp. II: iii, [1 (blank)], 404 pp. III: iii, [1 (blank)], 389, [1 (blank)] pp. Binding as above; spine of vol. I cracked through and the volume effectively in two pieces; II and III entirely sound while abraded at bottoms of front covers. P. 183 of vol. I with natural paper flaws; margins of first and last few leaves in each volume with offsetting from pastedowns. Priced reflecting vol. I's misfortune, and the others' rather odd scrapings, this is still attractive on the shelf and, in use, a handsome early-19th-century edition. Bookseller Inventory # 6871
