About this Item
"Encore - A Continuing Anthology" was an entertaining periodical devoted to literature of all sorts - fiction and non-fiction, serious and not-so-serious, poetry and prose. It did not restrict itself to current authors, but delved far into the past to include ancient authors, as well as writers closer to the twentieth century. It was eclectic - it did not avoid uncomfortable issues, thus there are articles on race (Gunnar Myrdal on "Who is a Negro?"); it did not restrict its content to the Western Canon (thus we see an excerpt from Mohammed on morals, and, also, some precepts from Confucius); it brought in famous authors such as Shelley, Hazlitt, Dickens, Washington Irving, Tolstoy, and Boccaccio; arts include traditional things, but modern artists such as Paul Gauguin, NYCAaron Copeland and Salvador Dali contribute, as well as various commentaries on film, book reviews, and Howard Mumford on architecture; philosophical entries include Schopenhauer, Russell, Emerson, Thomas More, Machiavelli; history makes an appearance through James Boswell, Hector St. John Crèvecoeur, Tocqueville, the Reverend R. Walsh (a Visit to a Slave Ship), James Madison and others; science is not shirked - both physical and human, (Freud, Sir Arthur Eddington, Thorsten Veblin).
There is a good deal of humor, both written and visual is included (Damon Runyan, Will Rogers, A. P. Herbert, etc) There is much, much more in this hardbound 1946 Volume 10, which includes the issues from July to December. We've only mentioned a few of the authors included, but have provided a view of the Table of Contents (use the zoom function provided). If you have any questions about content please enquire.
