Originally published in two separate volumes, as Ideas of Order (1936) and The Man with the Blue Guitar and Other Poems (1937). "Ideas of Order, a volume in which Stevens bids farewell to the "venereal soil" of the South and attempts, in poems like "Sad Strains of a Gay Waltz" and "Mozart, 1935," to adjust to the bleaker aesthetic and social climate of the 1930s, to 'these sudden mobs of men' and 'streets [?] full of cries'. . . . The relationship between the poet and society is negotiated with greater poise in The Man with the Blue Guitar. . . [its] extended sequence of couplets playing variations on the theme of the relationship between art and things as they are: 'They said, "You have a blue guitar, / You do not play things as they are." / The man replied, "Things as they are / Are changed upon the blue guitar." This theme, Stevens's hallmark "'magination-reality' complex, is pursued almost obsessively in his poetry and prose of the 1940s." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B.
