Very good. Original folds just visible. Size 4.75 x 5 Inches. This is a finely-engraved miniature map of Africa, printed in a 1661 Elzevir edition of Philipp Cluver's introduction to geography. Cluver's work appeared in editions produced by many different houses, and with maps of wildly differing characteristics. The Map The map, geographically, closely resembles the Africa map appearing in the 1641 Conrad Buno edition of Cluver; both appear to follow the model of Blaeu's 1617 atlas map of the continent, and while not identical, the placenames on both maps match closely. The present map improves on its predecessor - first, in including placenames lacking on the earlier map, and second, in markedly improving the legibility of the map and its lettering. Throughout, the map is more expertly engraved with an even, light hand; even the cartouche of this example is more elegantly and artistically rendered than the clumsy, blockish cartouche of the 1641 Buno. A Mystery Engraver? A Woman? None of the maps appearing in the Elzevir edition of Cluver's Introductionis in universam geographiam are signed by an engraver. For a miniature map, this is not unusual - very often this work was executed by journeyman engravers, who would not have the right to apply their imprint to the work. However, it is very possible that the matriarch of the Elzevir firm - Eva van Alphen - did this work herself. She is known to have been an accomplished engraver, having been credited with a beautiful Dutch Bible map after Visscher ( Orbis Terrarum Tabula Recens Emendata et in Lucem Edita per N. Visscher ). At the time that their edition of Cluver was produced, Eva's husband Jean was in failing health and upon his 1661 death she took over the direction of the firm. The excellent work here may well be hers. Publication History and Census The map was engraved for inclusion in Philipp Cluver's Introductionis in universam geographiam , as early as 1659. Though he did not live to see it in print, Cluver's text would be one of the most popular of the seventeenth century, which was printed in many editions starting in 1624 but continuing well into the 18th century. Shipping
Geographicus ships Fedex Ground orders Tuesday, and Thursday. Typically orders placed before 3PM EST during these days, will be shipped on the same day. Orders placed after 3PM EST will be shipped on the next shipping day. For domestic shipping, we use FedEx Ground, FedEx Express, and if necessary USPS Express. International shipments are dispatched via DHL or FedEx International, depending on the size of parcel and destination. Other shipping can be arranged on request but may incur additional fees. We do not ship on Saturdays, Sundays, or official U.S. Holidays. All shipments require a signature on delivery. All shipments are insured. Clients will be provided with a tracking number for all shipments. Geographicus does not use freight forwarders or third party shipping agents.
We do our best to ensure timely delivery of your purchases. Nonetheless, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays, weekends, international customs, vehicle breakdowns, and inclement weather can result in unforeseen and unavoidable delays. If you are purchasing an item for a gift or you otherwise have a specific deadline, please specify this information on your order form and use a shipping method that allows a safe time cushion for receipt of your order.
Handling, Customs, and Storage
Geographicus does not refund any shipping, handling, storage fees or international customs charges that the buyer may incur after purchasing an item from us. All customs charges are the buyer's responsibility and will vary from country to country. Insurance
All maps and books shipped to and from Geographicus Rare Antique Maps are insured by our Fine Arts Dealer policy. The deductible on all shipped items is 100 USD. The deductible is paid by the shipper unless otherwise agreed. Damage claims must be filed within 7 days of receipt to be honored. Lost parcel claims can be filed up to 3 months after the shipment is sent.
