5.5 x 9 inches, modern gouache colour, copperplate engraving. The 'Hortus Floridus' by Crispijn van de Passe (1594/5-1670) was 'without question the most popular florilegium ever published' (Oak Spring Flora). Although van de Passe produced a technically accurate work which became an indispensable reference work his artistic talents were also expressed well. Many of his plates were unique for the period in displaying the plants in their natural surroundings rather than floating on a blank page. He is also noted for introducing insect life and even the odd animal to his images. Van de Passe was the son of an engraver of the same name. Ref. Philip D. Burden joined his father in the business in 1979. His interests included the British Isles and North America. He wrote and published in 1996 and 2007 the definitive two volume treatise entitled ?The Mapping of North America?. This was the first work to list all known printed maps relating to North America up to the year 1700. Each fully described and illustrated. Clive A. Burden Ltd. is a member of the following organisations: the ABA (Antiquarian Bookdealers Association), ILAB (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers), and IMCoS (International Map Collector?s Society).
