Detroit de Waigats.(Old Maps, 17th Century Maps, Asia, Russian Empire, Arctic Circle, Nova Zembla, Whaling Ships, Samoyodes). Issued Frankfort, Germany, 1683 for A. M. Mallet. Charming late 17th century copper engraved map, with pleasing full hand color. Note the four tiny whaling ships sailing through the Arctic straits. Bear in bottom foreground, houses of Samoyodes shown on New Holland. The image has a near folk-art feel, a style unique to this time in history. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this very reason. Sheet measures c. 5" x 8". Printed area measures c. 4 1/2" x 6". Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 3. p.196[R33390].
