Mossman's study is based on manuscript registers for Edinburgh owned by the Councils of the Scottish Meteorological Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Meteorological Society which recorded daily observations from 1847 to 1886. The second part contains an extensive catalogue of remarkable atmospheric phenomena for the period and tables on barometric pressure, temperature observations, rainfall, wind, and sunshine from the 1730s to the 1890s.
