About this Item

Elliott, E[zekiel] B[rown] (1823-88). On the military statistics of the United States of America. [6], 44pp. 3 lithographed charts. Berlin: R. v. Decker, 1863. 277 x 226 mm. Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style, original printed wrappers (chipped, repaired) bound in. Paper deacidified, chips and tears repaired. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title: "Allan Man(?) Esqr. with kindest regards of the Author E. B. Elliott." First Separate Edition. Elliott, a life insurance actuary and statistician, joined the U. S. Sanitary Commission in 1861, shortly after the outbreak of the American Civil War. His paper, prepared in part for the fifth International Statistical Congress in Berlin (1863), focuses primarily on military statistics relating to ìthe mortality, the sickness, and other casualties, and to certain physiological characteristics of the soldiers in the existing volunteer serviceî; i.e., the Union Army. Issued in the second year of the war, Elliottís paper is one of the earliest works on American Civil War military medical statistics published, and one of the rarest on the market, perhaps because it was printed in Berlin. The paper is also a pioneering work on military medical statistics in general, as indicated in Elliottís note at the foot of p. 1: Several of the principal tables in this memoir were prepared at Washington D.C. under the general direction of the Sanitary Commission, and immediate supervision of the author, previous to the meeting to the International Statistical Congress at Berlin, in September 1863. These tables have been carefully revised, others constructed and added, and the memoir itself, mainly written and composed in Berlin, subsequent to the session of the Congress. In its preparation, in addition to other facilities, free access to the very valuable library of the Royal Statistical Bureau in Berlin has been afforded to the Author, by the High Privy Councillor, Dr. Engel, the director of the Bureau and President of the late Statistical Congress, through which several important facts regarding the state of European armies have been obtained. It is to be regretted that, up to this time the collection of facts of this kind respecting armies is very limited (italics ours). Elliottís work was printed on poor quality acidic paper stock, which required deacidification and repair. Appletonís Cyclopaedia of American Biography. Bookseller Inventory # 16725
