12mo, pp. [3], 6-16, [1]-176; inserted engraved vignette title page, 5 engraved plates by Charles Heath after Richard Westall; contemporary half tan calf over marbled boards; extremities rubbed, a little bit of cracking of the calf along the joints; good and sound, or better. Ownership signature of "Nora Greene / Gresham" on the engraved title page. First published in 1771 and again in 1774, bringing Beattie (1745-1803), by profession a moral philosopher, praise and fame. The poem raised nature description to a new level, was deeply influential on subsequent writers, and was reprinted in numerous editions.
