About this Item

With frontispiece, folding map, and several plates. Includes publisher's advertisements. Publisher's cloth with gilt spine and gilt blind stamp on front board, spine slightly rubbed, but otherwise in very good condition; light occasional spotting limited mostly to the first and last few leaves. With an unobtrusive library sticker on the paste-down, a nineteenth century inscription on the fly-leaf, and several library stamps on the preliminary and final pages. Third edition. Isabella Bird (1831-1904) was one of the great nineteenth century female travelers and the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. "Her decision and determination made her the most notable woman traveller of her time, setting standards which any traveller, man or woman, would be proud to attain" (ODNB). Initially setting sail to seek a better climate for her health, Bird voyaged to Australia and New Zealand and thereafter to Hawaii (known to Europe then as the Sandwich Islands), where she was inspired to write the present work. Originally published in 1875 by her friend and lifelong publisher John Murray, this work was among the author's most popular travel accounts. Her other travels include the Rocky Mountains and the near and far East, including India, and Korea, and Tibet. Bookseller Inventory # 15005
