About this Item

With frontispiece portrait of author. Original brown cloth, decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt, front joint starting, very light wear to extremities; other than some scattered foxing, an excellent copy with a contemporary ownership inscription. First edition of this scarce work on early Illinois and its citizens, from about 1800. Apparently most copies of this work were destroyed; according to Howes, "of 400 copies printed, 300 burned in the first Chicago fire." The author includes a great deal of Mormon-related information and material.Reynolds was a justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, and eventually was elected governor in 1830.
