About this Item

Autograph letter signed to "Dear Edward" from "David": 4pp. 8vo, [Edinburgh], 20 November [1964]. Together with a greetings card to Tom Morrison, undated ("with all best wishes for Christmas from his godfather David . . ."). "How things move" - he is surprised to hear that the Morrisons' son, his godson Tom, is already being confirmed. Alas, he won't be able to be there - but should they all meet? If the Morrisons motor to Wales from London, surely they will pass Fossbridge? Next year he will be "a visiting Prof. for 4 months in the U.S.A. [at Mt Holyoke College] - our first visit, in part in order to see the collections & museums, with the lectures to pay for it all". At about this time Edward Alexander Morrison III (1907-1995), a US-born lawyer who had a good war in the RAF, bought the handsome but dilapidated Nannau House, near Dolgellau. David Talbot Rice (1903-1972), Watson-Gordon Professor of the History of Fine Art at Edinburgh, 1934-72, sometime collaborator with Robert Byron on The Birth of Western Painting (1930), was at Oxford with Evelyn Waugh and a fellow member of the Hypocrites Club: he "seemed to live a life of carefree pleasure", recalled Waugh.
