Lieutenant John B. Dale (1814-1848) began his naval career when he was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy in 1829. A talented artist, he became one of three illustrators selected for the monumental United States Exploring Expedition, a groundbreaking scientific journey led by the ambitious Commander Charles Wilkes.
