Hans Virchow (1852-1940), German Anatomist, son of Rudolph Carl Virchow (1821-1902), studied medicine in Germany, including the University of Wurzburg (1877-1882). In 1889 he was appointed professor anatomy at the University of Berlin. Duke-Elder, the leading figure for the study of ophthalmology, praised Hans Virchow for his work on the histological structure of the eye, which he determined using the microscope. Duke-Elder adds that Virchow "Throughout his long and industrious life, he browsed widely over the broad fields of medicine and the natural sciences . . .He not only made innumerable contributions to our knowledge of human anatomy, but became an authority on anthropology and carried his anatomical observations over a wide field in zoology, particularly among the Mammalia; the anatomy of the leopard, the elephant, the tiger, the crocodile, and the higher apes, among many other species, equally claimed his interest." Duke-Elder, System of Ophthalmology: The anatomy of the visual system, vol. II, p. 95. The Natural History Society of Berlin (GNF) was founded in 1773 and is adjacent to the Gdansk Scientific Society, the oldest German private natural history society.
