About this Item

Inscribed to Jacques-Joseph Moreau Calmeil, Louis. De la paralysie consideree chez les alienes. Inscribed, "Au Dr. J. Moreau [Mozeau?]/ son collegue et ami/ F. Calmeil." Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, richly gilt spine. Foxing but a very good copy with an important association. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 4797. "Classic description of general paralysis. Calmeil's work complements Bayle's earlier delineation of general paralysis (No. 4795). Between the two of them they established the clinical picture of general paralysis of the insane, associating it with chronic inflammation of the brain. This was the first breakthrough in neuro-psychiatric research, and it gave psychiatry the spur to precise and systematic clinical, pathological, and statistical innovation on its own terms." (GM 4797). Moreau, a toxicologist and psychologist, to whom Calmeil inscribed this copy, was the author of the "classic monograph on cannabis intoxication, and a most important scientific work on the subject" (GM 2077.2).
