About this Item

Page, David (1814-79). The past and present life of the globe, being a sketch in outline of the world's life-system. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1861. 256pp., plus 16-page publisher's catalogue. Text wood-engravings. 186 x 122 mm. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered spine, gilt vignette stamped on front cover, light wear. First Edition. Page, the scientific editor at W. & R. Chambers publishing house in Edinburgh, was the author of several geological textbooks and accounts of Scottish stratigraphy. He served as the president of the Geological Society of Edinburgh in 1863 and 1865. The present work, written for a general audience, was intended to give the reader "an intelligible conception of the whole" of biology "as a great and continuously evolving scheme of vegetable and animal existences" (p. 7). Page based his account on geological and paleontological evidence, and quoted Darwin on the origin of life (pp. 210-211), but did not accept the idea that "chance and nature" were solely responsible for species development. 40433.
