Signed "Joe Engle" in black ink. Color NASA photograph measures 10.0" X 8.0" and is in FINE condition. This is a photograph of Shuttle ALT Crew 2 which included Joe Engle and Richard Truly. It has been personally signed by only Joe Engle. The Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) were a series of sixteen 1977 taxi and flight trials of the prototype Space Shuttle Enterprise to test the vehicle's flight characteristics, eleven while mated to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and five in crewed free flight. The program lasted from February until October 1977, with a pair of two-man crews assigned to the orbiter: Joe Henry Engle (born August 26, 1932) is an American pilot, aeronautical engineer and former NASA astronaut. He was the commander of two Space Shuttle missions including STS-2 in 1981, the program's second orbital flight. He was mission commander on STS-51-I and logged over 225 hours in space.He also flew two flights in the Shuttle program's 1977 Approach and Landing Tests. Engle is one of twelve pilots who flew the North American X-15, an experimental spaceplane jointly operated by the Air Force and NASA, and the last surviving test pilot of the aircraft.
