About this Item

Revised (and Definitive) Edition. Tall 8vo: xviii,[2],224pp, with four folding maps and plans and numerous illustrations in the text. Original publisher's maroon decorative cloth, paneled and textured in blind and stamped in gilt on spine and upper cover; pale yellow endpapers; edges untrimmed; bookplate of Pat Murray on front paste down. Inscribed "From the Author" on the half-title. An excellent copy, the handsome binding tight and square, pages virtually free of foxing and stains (excepting end papers and half-title, which are lightly spotted), maps and plans properly folded and without tears. By the mid-19th century, a number of amateur archaeologists, including, most prominently, Frank Calvert and MacLaren, had identified Hisarlik (or Hissarlik), in Turkey, as the site of ancient Troy, but their pioneering work was overshadowed in the 1870s by the great German amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. MacLaren had published A Dissertation on the Topography of the Plain of Troy as early as 1822, and in the early 1860s, after visiting Hisarlik, he positively identified it as the site of Ancient Troy in his The Plain of Troy Described, often identified as a reissue, or second edition, of A Dissertation. But in the book's preface, MacLaren explains, "Two-thirds of the present edition either consist of new matter, or have been rewritten; and I have not therefore put 'second edition' on the title-page."
