Later American edition of Cowper's verse, with a brief biography of the poet, here in an attractive embossed leather binding. Binding: Early example of an American embossed binding. Contemporary embossed sheep, central arabesque design on pebbled background, spine with foliate strapwork. 12mo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., add. engr. t.-p., 491, [1 (blank)] pp. Wolf, Gothic Windows to Peacocks, 88. Binding as above, moderately worn over edges and extremities, covers with small areas of discoloration. All edges gilt. Front free endpaper with several inked ownership inscriptions, one dated 1841; front fly-leaf with more inscriptions, one dated 1836 and noting sale to new owner in 1841. Some cockling; a very few stray pencil marks; some pages with spots of foxing ranging from mild to moderate. Bookseller Inventory # 6188
