Stated third edition. The preface states that the first edition appeared in 1837, the second (enlarged) edition in 1845. The book is divided into three parts, the first treating the dogma of the supremacy of the Bishop of Rome in spiritual matters; the second concerns the secular power of the Papacy in history; the third shows the influence of the Papacy over science, literature, and the arts. Francis Patrick Kenrick (1796?1863) was Bishop of Philadelphia. Dedicated to His Holiness, Pope Pius IX. Includes a "Catalogue of the Popes" on pp. 515?527. 8vo. xii, [2], [15]?527, [1] pp. Publisher's blue cloth, stamped in gilt and blind; spine sunned, binding soiled, head and foot of spine with small tears, back cover with stain and some bubbling to cloth; back hinge (inside) starting, but binding otherwise solid. Signed by a previous owner on front free endpaper. Some leaves with mild spotting. Occasional old water stains. Pages 526-527 a little soiled. Three leaves with chips in outer margins.
