About this Item

first and only edition and printing (not stated); offprint (sobretiro, separatum) from the journal Anales de Antropologia, Vol. 1, Mexico, 1964; in Spanish; INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR 'SALUDOS / M. S.' on the front cover; .from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with Gilbert's inscription on p; 91; discusses classification and interrelationships among the Otomanguean languages such as Zapotec and Mixtec; would interest collectors, researchers, and students of these languages, and more generally, the work of Morris Swadesh; Swadesh and my father were fellow students in Sapir's classes at the University of Chicago in the early 1930s; when I met Swadesh in the last year of his life in 1966 while he was teaching at the Canadian Summer School of Linguistics at Edmonton Alberta, I learned to appreciate another view of anthropology, different from what I grew up with; I sat in on his classes on Mexican languages that summer and he kindly gave me this inscribed offprint dealing with (what turned out to be his last thoughts on) Otomanguean classification and relationship problems; 23.5 x 16.2 cm, pages 91-123. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
