Walsh's text provides MSW course instructors and students with a single volume that incorporates concise, comprehensive coverage of eleven major clinical practice theories that social workers commonly use in their assessment, planning, and intervention tasks with individuals, families, and groups. The book's scope encompasses a broad view of the practice field, yet still allows students to look closely at each theory discussed.

"A refreshing look at traditional social work practice alongside the newest intervention strategies.... The strength is its straightforward presentation of theories that will give students the opportunity to select a direction for their practice that fits their world view and personality."
"Unique in that it specifically addresses how each theory fits with the guiding principles of social work practice including client empowerment, respect for diversity, operating from a strengths-oriented perspective, recognition of client spirituality issues and the mandate to promote social justice."
"It is the only [book] to specifically apply each theory to social work practice and principles."
