PreS In the fourth in this series, a mischievous dog flees with Teddy's favorite hat during a play-day in the garden with Teddy's three friends. Their search unearths different items, but a chance look under a neglected bush yields the elusive hatsported by a porcupine. Continuity is established among titles with recognizable features such as Teddy's friends, the dog, and Teddy's hat. With no children appearing in the last two titles, Teddy seems to be evolving as a character from a toy to an individual in his own right. As well, his increasingly distinct features and the clarity of line continue to evolve from the fuzzy sketchiness that appeared in Teddy's First Christmas (Holt, 1982). Illustrations are large, distinct, pastel-colored pencil sketches that enhance and elaborate upon a minimal text ideally suited for toddler storytimes. Davidson skillfully weaves together subjects and events that are both inviting and relevant to two and three year olds.
