During World War II, with her father about to ship overseas, eleven-year-old Leslie Jamieson creates a special gift for her father--the biggest flag in town

From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7-- Leslie Jamieson, a sixth grader in the Midwest of 1943, is tired of the bad news that is a constant on the radio. In the solemn time of World War II, she tries to be optimistic as she patiently waits for her father to return home. While her family is busily preoccupied with creating special welcoming gifts, Leslie decides that a flag is needed for the town's servicemen, an idea upon which she diligently expounds for a class essay. Her enthusiasm is boundless; the stunning reality of the flag brings pride and joy to her father. In the meantime, Leslie has befriended Buddy, a boy who is convinced that their neighbor is a Nazi spy. The book is cleverly written, bringing out many of the details of World War II (standing in line for stockings, preparing for blackouts, collecting cans and other ``useful junk,'' saving gas coupons for special occasions). With an engaging main character and a fairly well-developed supporting cast, the narrative flows, intermingling intense drama and a hint of humor. An interesting companion to this would be Janet Taylor Lisle's Sirens and Spies (Bradbury, 1985), which depicts the attempts to trace another German sympathizer of the era. --Debra S.
