Lee's newest journal narrative is set in the Sixties when, a marijuana devotee and Berkeley dropout, she met and married her first husband. We know from Signs of Spring ( LJ 2/15/80) that later he would abandon her and their children when she became ill with Hodgkin's disease, so a discernible shadow falls over this account of their courtship and first year together, underlining subtle clues to the future. Yet mainly this is a whimsical, endearing tale. Lee's prose and drawings are evocative and moving, as always, and the characterization of husband Richard is more complex than her usual portraits of men, especially compared with Mourning into Dancing ( LJ 8/84).
