From the Back Cover:
Introducing the first major reference guide to color strategies, methods, and applications

Apart from issues of form and space, nothing factors into architectural design as much as color. And when it comes to giving you an in-depth, highly useful look at how color comes into play in the overall design of interior and exterior environments, Color in Architecture: Design Methods for Buildings, Interiors, and Urban Spaces is truly in a league of its own.

"What effect does color have on the completed architectural design?" "What colors work best in certain applications?" ...If you're an architect or designer aiming to design buildings that fit with their surroundings, questions like these come with the territory. Throughout Color in Architecture, noted author and expert color theorist Harold Linton has made it his mission to answer these and many other questions encountered on the job, making it that much easier for you to work with color day to day, on projects large and small. Every aspect of color planning and application is presented with over 200 examples from an array of colorists, showing you how color solutions can be applied to a wide array of architectural designs. Page after page, Linton provides color styling examples for:
* Residential architecture
* Interior spaces
* Cultural and public institutions
* Retailing and business applications
* Industrial environments

Also included are sections on color technology, education, and research, along with descriptions of major color order systems and a list of societies and organizations that guide this evolving discipline. Plus, the book includes over 200 color photographs showcasing the work of today's most accomplished colorists, together with artists' and designers' comments on the successful methodologies.

FROM THE FLAP

From restaurants and retail spaces to offices and residences, no architectural design is truly finished until the color is assigned. When you look at the wealth of new building materials available today, it's easy to see that architects and design professionals are faced with more choices than ever before. New options in color and texture raise questions that sit beyond the realm of most architectural training programs -- questions like: "What color scheme is appropriate for the architecture?", "What challenges are presented during the design process and how are they met?", "What materials and adjustments are needed to carry the design from the drafting table to the finished work?", and, most important of all, "To what extent does color influence the overall perception of a completed architectural design?"

The answers are all here, in this one task-simplifying, comprehensive volume from Harold Linton, one of the foremost experts in architectural color theory. Color in Architecture: Design Methods for Buildings, Interiors, and Urban Spaces addresses every aspect of color planning and application. Going far beyond a theory-based "textbook" approach on the subject matter, Linton draws on over 200 real-world examples from an international cast of professional colorists. Case studies of various design challenges and solutions are presented in an easy-to-understand workshop format. Each of the studies lets you dig a little deeper, giving you significant insight into the practices of professional color designers and illustrating how to clarify the planning concepts, capitalize on the visual properties of color, and select from the range of industrial materials available for both interior and exterior building surfaces. Collectively, the studies run from private residences, cultural and public institutions, retailing and business applications, industrial spaces, and recent urban design projects.

Since one central aspect of design is creating a built environment that is at one with its surroundings, Linton provides a global perspective of the problems faced by architects and designers around the world. Additionally, the book presents results from applicable studies in the social sciences and technology, such as addressing the effects of color on human behavior, and detailing the benefits that new technologies bring to the design and building process.

From cover to cover, this invaluable, one-of-a-kind resource offers guidance and analysis of the latest topics in color theory, including new media, the increasing palettes of color building materials, and new color systems. Whether you're an architect, interior designer, industrial and graphic designer, or student, Color in Architecture -- lavishly illustrated with over 200 full-color photographs -- is an unbeatable, essential-to-your-work tool that you'll reach for again and again.
