The glamorous movie-star-turned-Princess Faith became the toast of the Riviera's San Sebastian, but her attempts to keep the Mafia away from the principality's casinos cost her that glittery life

From Publishers Weekly:
Yesterday's headlines play a large part in Waller's slick new novel. Amazing Faith is Her Serene Highness Princess Faith, wife of Prince Florian Gulda, ruler of San Sebastian, a small principality on the Mediterranean. Like its neighbor, Monaco, San Sebastian is a glittery watering hole for the rich and famous, and its princess, like Monaco's, was once an American film star, renowned for a certain elegant sexuality. The plot involves a scheme by organized crime to gain control of San Sebastian's lucrative gambling operations by financing a new harbor. Intrigue exists on all levels. Even the Guldas' son Michele and daughter Paola become involved. Faith's long-time friend, singer Maggie Rose, has criminal associates, and palace chauffeur Eugenio Magari is in reality an officer in San Sebastian's secret police. Also making appearances are various palace functionaries and Hollywood types. Unfortunately, the characterizations are lax, motivations often muddled, the pacing slow. Waller, who is perhaps best known for his nonfiction books, Dog Day Afternoon and Hide in Plain Sight, barely keeps the pot boiling in this one. Literary Guild selection.

From Library Journal:
Based on the tragic final decade of Monaco's Princess Grace, this roman a clef by a former crime reporter and intelligence agent presents a plausible scenariothe Mafia, thwarted in its attempts to take over the principality's gambling profits, retaliates against its royal family by deliberately abetting the daughter's sexual antics and eventually killing the former Hollywood star in a faked auto accident. Waller, author of the bestselling quartet of novels on international finance that began with The Banker , intended this fast-moving entertainment for a sophisticated adult audience. He offers much less explicit sex than Harold Robbins does in his recent books, but plently of violence and some kinky scenes. Too bad the title sounds like an inspirational book; it may not reach the right readers.Joyce Smothers, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan,
