The first edition of this book had as its main objective to make the subject of small animal nutrition accessible by making it readable. It covered the basics of digestion, absorption and nutrient needs along with more complex matters such as feeding animals which are ill, the special needs of growing dogs, orphaned puppies and individuals doing very hard work. The second edition takes the subject on to a greater stage of development in the light of recent advances. The general awareness of foods and feeding has grown enormously. This is especially true of the impact diet has on the management and prevention of a wide variety of canine and feline diseases. The section on small animal clinical nutrition has also been greatly expanded in the light of current knowledge.
