Written and designed for first-year, first-semester dental hygiene programs, this easy-to-read and well-organized resource helps the reader develop basic introductory and practical skills. Each clinical process is written in a step-by-step fashion, an ideal format for the hands-on learner.
Features:Essentials of Dental Hygiene is written for the first-year, first semester of the dental hygiene curriculum. The purpose of this book is to develop basic introductory skills that will be utilized while providing dental hygiene care in the clinical setting. The challenge for us was to design the book focusing solely on the skills necessary to provide initial treatment for the dental hygiene patient. We recognize there are more skills and services involved in the comprehensive care of the patient—those additional skills and services will be covered in a follow up textbook.
The ten chapters are introduced in the order the dental hygienist provides treatment for the patient. Each chapter is written in an outline format, which offers the student a comfortable style for reading the material, while providing basic, fundamental information. Each chapter provides the first-year dental hygiene student the opportunity to learn about an individual process or skill in a step-by-step sequence. Not only are the skills provided—the hows—but also the reasons—the whys.
Objectives are listed at the beginning of each chapter. This provides the student with fundamental concepts contained within the chapter. Key terms are also provided at the beginning of each chapter as a quick, easy glossary reference. Contained within each chapter are text boxes containing interesting information the dental hygiene student will find useful.
References to current literature are made throughout the book. They reflect current research results and support the philosophy of life-long learning. At the end of the chapter are review questions, which serve as a self-evaluation for the student. Students can review the text, answer the questions, and reflect back to the material to reinforce the information. In addition, a companion CD-ROM supplements the procedures presented in the written text through video clips and additional photographs.
Each chapter presents the following information:
