For Mathematics Methods in Elementary School courses. The first methods textbook to show readers how NCTM Principles and Standards drive mathematics instruction is now the first to take you right into the math classroom to examine children's reasoning and see its implications for teaching. This thoroughly revised edition illustrates how to create a learner-centered classroom that allows the reader to nurture a child's ability to communicate mathematical thinking and link that knowledge to developmentally appropriate teaching practices. A strong focus on NCTM Standards, developing tools for teaching, and its manageable length ensures readers will use this book as a reference well into their first years of teaching. Connecting to the Standards sections use the Annenberg/CPB videos and IMAP CD clips to demonstrate how to teach to the NCTM content and process standards. Illustrates for readers how to easily integrate daily classroom implementation of the NCTM content and process standards to meet state and school district mandates. Standards Matrix tables open each chapter clearly outlining the developmentally appropriate standards each chapter covers. Readers make connections between chapter content and professional standards, and use a basis for portfolio development, and a rich reference resource for their first classroom. Standards Links - connect the NCTM Standards to the mathematical concepts addressed in the text Readers become familiar with standards accountability that will assist them in lesson planning. Manipulatives are now located in the back of every copy of the book and available online

From the Back Cover:

This thoroughly revised edition of Learning Mathematics in Elementary and Middle Schools, Fifth Edition continues to illustrate how to create a leaner-centered classroom with a strengthened pedagogical thread around mathematical thinking, content understanding, and formative assessment.

This new edition helps teachers learn to analyze children’s mathematical thinking in spoken and written work in order to adapt instruction more effectively through:

  • opening pre-assessments of mathematics topics in the content area chapters,
  • classroom vignettes,
  • video that examines children’s mathematical reasoning including clips from the well-known IMAP: Integrating Mathematics and Pedagogy to Illustrate Children’s Reasoning project and additional classroom video
