Sociology of Education in Canada utilizes a contemporary theoretical focus to analyze how education in Canada is affected by pre-existing and persistent inequalities among members of society. It presents the historical and cultural factors that have shaped our current education system, examines the larger social trends that have contributed to present problems, discusses the various interest groups involved, and analyzes the larger social discourses that influence any discussion of these issues.

To achieve this, Karen Robson uses many current, topical, and relatable issues in Canadian education to ensure that readers fully comprehend the information being presented and leave with an appreciation of how the sociology of education is inextricably linked to issues of stratification.

Review:

“This chapter [3] provides a thorough and detailed overview of the historical developments of formal education in Canada. Other texts do not provide anywhere near this level of detail and so this chapter has the potential to be a particularly strong source for this information. The attention to detail and comprehensive coverage of each jurisdiction is impressive....This chapter [7] is very well done in terms of describing structural characteristics of formalised education and relating these elements to reproduced social inequalities. This is a very contemporary concern and so including this material is a strength of this text in terms of keeping the narrative relevant.”

--Anthony Campeau, Child and Family Studies, Nipissing University

“The book covers a wide and substantial breadth without being trivial, dealing with a range of the central issues and giving us a comprehensive overview of the area of sociology in education in Canada....On the whole, it is an excellent and insightful book reflecting a major cross-section of the field...setting out questions and an organization which allow potential students to reflect and engage the subject area. Well done.”

--C. Paul Olson, Sociology and Equity Studies in Education, OISE, University of Toronto

“I find the writing level of the author to be appropriate in both tone and form. Clear, non-judgemental and not inflammatory. Student teachers would be able to read this material and learn from it.”

“Overall, I think the text will make a strong contribution to the field, and we would certainly consider adopting the text.”
