This is a totally absorbing reconstruc tion of the real life and tragic death of 67-year-old Phyllis Iannotta, mentally ill, out on rotation from an overcrowd ed, overburdened ``dwelling place'' which could offer her (and far too many other homeless women) only occasion al shelter. Reporter Kates's dogged three-year pursuit of Iannotta's past does not lead to the murderer. It does reveal, in quite amazing detail, the fate ful individual, cultural, and societal cir cumstances which, coupled with the onset of paranoid schizophrenia, had this woman wandering the tough streets of New York City. The plight of all the Iannottas in our affluent country is, in a most telling way, brought to life here as a result of her death and Kates's fo cused concerns. Highly recommend ed. Suzanne W. Wood, SUNY Agri culural & Technical Coll. Lib., Alfred
