This supplement to Flowers of the Himalaya (Oxford, 1984) covers species that were not included in the previous book, with much new photographic material that has since become available. It also includes illustrations of species that were given only a written description or which were illustrated by simple drawings. Many tropical species and some exotics are included. In all, 584 species are described and illustrated in color. In conjunction with the previous volume, which covered more than a thousand species, this supplement provides the most comprehensive field guide available for the plants of the Himalayan region.

Review:

"The very good quality of the photographs in Stainton's supplement makes many of them better than comparable pictures in the 1984 work. The two volumes together now provide an excellent compact reference library for identifying Himalayan plants except for grasses and sedges, from Kahsmir to the border between Nepal and Sikkim. Together with the three-volume An Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal (Hara et al., 1978-1982), and the Flora of Bhutan, now in progress for publication by A.J.C. Grierson and D.G. Long, identification of flowering plants throughout the Himalayan range has become relatively easy for both amateurs and professional botanists." --The Quarterly Review of Biology

"Over 600 new color photographs grace this welcome addition to Flowers of the Himalaya. The supplement contains about 350 species not previously described . . . . Adam Stainton and Oxford University Press are to be congratulated for making accessible to the general public so wide a representation of the lovely Himalayan flora." --Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club
