Recognizing the growing importance of awareness of international social issues for social workers, this thoroughly revised edition provides an updated introduction to a variety of these issues in the Global South, including AIDS, forced labor and war and conflict. A new issue in this edition is examining how the changing physical environment impacts social work practice around the world. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as other UN human rights documents, is used as a framework to examine examples of social injustice and human rights violations. The issues are examined in their cultural contexts to help the reader understand how they developed and why they persist. Each chapter for a particular issue ends in a "Culture Box" which offers an in-depth look at the issue in a particular country, enabling the reader to gain a deeper understanding of how culture impacts the development of social issues. Suggestions for effecting change, both in one's personal or professional life are listed for each chapter and an Appendix offers a variety of resources for engaging in international social work.

About the Author:

Susan C. Mapp, PhD, is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Work at Elizabethtown College.
Review:

"This text provides a critical contextual overview of the major issues that are faced in international social work. It provides an excellent foundational understanding to anyone wishing to work within the international arena of social work."--Patrick Thomas Panos, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Social Work, Brigham Young University

"I warmly recommend this book to all social workers who are preparing to enter the arena of international social development. It is a true source of inspiration to those who dare to take up the challenge to show that social work can indeed make a major contribution toward reversing the processes of discrimination, poverty and gender oppression in the world."--Sven Hessle, Ph.D., Professor of Social Work, Stockholm University, and Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Social Welfare

"This book provides an excellent overview of universal human rights as an organizing framework for international social work, and I highly recommend it as a source of practical knowledge and useful information."--Catherine Hawkins, Ph.D., Professor, School of Social Work, Texas State University

"Susan Mapp has authored the definitive book on international social development. By incorporating human rights as the central organizing feature, she has brought a complex field into clear focus."--Mark Lusk, Ph.D., Professor and Director of Social Work, University of Texas at El Paso

"...exemplary...This book is not only important for social workers but an excellent read for anyone interested in current affairs and for those in related fields such as law, public policy, and public administration."--Reviewed by Nairruti Jani, University of Texas at Arlington, in Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

"There are other texts on human rights but none that ground human rights in the context of global social problems as well as this text. It in, Susan Mapp does something I have not found in other texts: she challenges students' knowledge of geography. She then shares contrasting theoretical bases so students begin to understand the need to look at areas from a variety of perspectives. This sets the stage for constant critical thinking." --Nancy Udolph, MSSW, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work and Family Studies, Ashland University

"Mapp's new edition of Human Rights and Social Justice in a Global Perspective is very user-friendly, with great online resources at the end of chapters...a great balance of academic writing, yet easy to read. In short, the world is a big place and this text is the macro of social work practice. Mapp's book is accessible to students, with understandable starting points for how to affect change." --Tanya M. Voss, MSSW, Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Field Education, School of Social Work, University of Texas
