After Effects, the video-compositing program from Adobe, lets you create all kinds of footage. Real World After Effects provides users of all levels with an excellent guide to this program. The guide thoroughly reviews the basic interface elements and teaches you how to create videos using still images, videos, or both together. Next, you import and work with Illustrator and Photoshop files, audio files, and 3-D effects. There's also some guidance on using third-party software--such as Adobe's Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere and MetaCreations's Painter, Detailer, and Expression--to prepare artwork for use in After Effects. The authors then bring you into the bulk of the product, teaching you how to work with keyframes and animations, mattes, transfer modes, and built-in and third-party filters. This section includes a chapter on using the Production Bundle, the version of After Effects that has high-end features such as Keyframe Assistants, Motion Math, and Motion Tracker. Finally, Real World After Effects helps you prepare your work for output by managing high-resolution artwork using proxies, placeholders, and Photoshop Comps. The authors follow up with additional technical information, such as National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) compliance and film rendering, which only advanced users will need to think about. You use the project files and instructions on the included CD-ROM to follow along with each task in the book. A full-color insert shows movie sequences from the book's projects as well as other artistic and commercial endeavors. The CD-ROM also includes photos, clip art, and demo versions of Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop, as well as Fractal Design Painter.
