This book deals with some of these events in an orderly manner and brings the discipline of political science to bear on the study of them. The book thus departs from the more common current~events approach. From the vantage point of elapsed time and accumulated information, the authors are able to supply a discipline~oriented study of what Iran means for its region and what political science and sociology have contributed and can yet contribute to a better understanding of the Islamic Republic. The authors trace the evolution of social science's dealings with Iran up to the present as a means of demonstrating not only what was wrong but also what was right about modernization theory. They also examine events in Iran in the light of theories of revolution, theories of regime types, and theories of current international ideological and power structures. This in~depth work looks at one of the most significant political experiments of our age from a great many perspectives. The authors draw upon interviews they conducted with Khomeini and former officers of the Shah, as well as opposition leaders such as Bani~Sadr and representatives of the monarchists. They also make use of U.S. embassy documents recently published by Iranian radicals. Their multitude of resources makes Benard and Khalilzads study one of unusually wide ranging scope and interest.
