PreSchool-Grade 1 Eight-year-old Jyoti has always lived with her mother, grandmother, and three younger sisters in a small village in India. Her father, like many other Indians, has gone to England to make a better life for his family, and he has saved the money to bring his wife and eldest daughter to live with him. Ganly's brief story juxtaposes the daily life, customs, and ceremonies of Jyoti's village with the modern conveniences of the larger town where Jyoti's cousin is married and the English city streets. Busy full-page wallpaper collages in bright colors combine with the text to convey the closeness of the Indian family, the richness of the wedding ceremony, the joyous colors of Indian dress, and in contrast, the starkness of the city's tall gray and brown buildings. In her new home, the child has a bedroom of her own from which she dreams of her family in India and wonders about her new existence. This simple, attractive introduction to the way of life followed by some 80% of India's population will be useful for social studies units and will also appeal to children.
