Les premiers sondages ne furent pas heureux, et pendant longtemps, l'exploration de la vallée de l'est fut poursuivie en pure perte. Le choix de ce défilé avait pour raison d'étre, qu'à sa nais sance, des grottes, habitées autrefois par les anachorétes, et qui, sans aucun doute, furent des hvpogées, sont encore reconnaissables, au milieu de carrieres qui fournirent la pierre des monuments d'hadrien. Ces hypogées furent - ils afiectés a des sépultures égvp tiennes ou romaines? La question est insoluble. Dévastés par les Coptes, ils ont perdu leur caractére primitif. Insensiblement, cette vallée, fort étroite a son entrée, s'élargit, et sur ses pentes, assez douces, des corniches s'échelonnent. Une a une, chacune de celles - ci fut sondée, sur deux kilomètres de longueur. La trace d'anciens travaux v fut bien retrouvée, mais aucun caveau ne fut mis a jour.
