"Although overshadowed during much of his life time by the famous Heitor Villa-Lobos, Guarnieri (1907—93) certainly belongs on the short list of Brazilian composers. Verhaalen (Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Milwaukee) captures Guarnieri's life and compositional technique in this volume, testifying to Guarnieri's fine work. Composing in a style that is national in flavor and dramatic in character, the composer wrote for piano, wind instruments, stringed instruments, orchestras, and chorales—and for combinations of all these. Verhaalen provides transcriptions of many of these compositions, and the accompanying CD offers musical examples.
