"As parents of a 'special child,' the Murrays have provided a very sensitive and moving account of living with and caring for their own son. At a very early age their child was found to have some retardation in his motor development. Even with an endless series of tests and consultations, the defect in the child's central nervous system evaded precise medical diagnosis. The authors' story, therefore, is a very special one dealing not only with the problems of caring for children with severe medical and psychological defects, but also with the unique difficulties associated with the uncertainties of an undiagnosable problem.... One of the central problems faced by the Murrays, and faced by other parents of similar children, is the ability to experience the special child as a person rather than as an object.... This search for a continuing sense of their son as a person ultimately led the Murrays to a consideration of what constitutes the essential components of human personality.
