A portion of this work was written several years ago in par tial redemption of a promise made the children of the author, and with no settled purpose as to its publication. 'vhen the writer was chosen Historian of the Regiment, it was deemed best not to change what had been written, but continue the original plan to a conclusion. The work as completed is not a history in any sense, but a simple relation of incidents connect ed with the regiment, coming to the knowledge of the writer, presented from an individual standpoint. In fact, the reader is pie-supposed to have a fair knowledge of history, and those who have not are respectfully referred to Doubleday's Chan cellorsville and Gettysburg, Henry M. Cist's Army of the and to Cox's Atlanta and The March to the Sea, etc., for general details.
