About the Author:
Ann Heinrichs grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and lives in Chicago. She is the author of more that one hundred books for children and young adults on Asian, African, and U.S. history and culture. Ann has also written numerous newspaper, magazine, and encyclopedia articles. She is an award-winning martial artist, specializing in t’ai chi empty-hand and sword forms. Ann has traveled widely throughout the United States, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In exploring each state for this series, she rediscovered the people, history, and resources that make this a great land, as well as the concerns we share with people around the world.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- This contribution to the series presents the essentials generally required for school reports in a dry, nonanalytical way. Topics such as the land and people, history, government, economy, culture, and recreation are outlined with little reference to causes or effects. While several pictures are missing captions and an occasional error appears in the text (e.g., Heinrichs suggests that an official decision on wolf introduction into Yellowstone has been made when, in fact, the controversy still rages), the book presents an up-to-date and accurate picture of life in Wyoming. Maps, charts, full-color photographs, and a clear format make it accessible. A ``Facts at a Glance'' section summarizes the material included and, in fact, makes reading of the entire text unnecessary. Libraries needing current information for traditional reports on the states will find this to be a serviceable addition to their collections. It is unfortunate that the issues and questions that might hook children into the real meat of social studies and their importance to their own lives (e.g., how has treatment of American Indians in Wyoming been a reflection of national policies?) are simply not addressed here. --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
