From the author of the New York Times best seller Swamplandia!—a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize—a magical new collection of stories that showcases Karen Russell’s gifts at their inimitable best.
A dejected teenager discovers that the universe is communicating with him through talismanic objects left behind in a seagull’s nest. A community of girls held captive in a silk factory slowly transmute into human silkworms, spinning delicate threads from their own bellies, and escape by seizing the means of production for their own revolutionary ends. A massage therapist discovers she has the power to heal by manipulating the tattoos on a war veteran’s lower torso. When a group of boys stumble upon a mutilated scarecrow bearing an uncanny resemblance to the missing classmate they used to torment, an ordinary tale of high school bullying becomes a sinister fantasy of guilt and atonement. In a family’s disastrous quest for land in the American West, the monster is the human hunger for acquisition, and the victim is all we hold dear. And in the collection’s marvelous title story—an unforgettable parable of addiction and appetite, mortal terror and mortal love—two vampires in a sun-drenched lemon grove try helplessly to slake their thirst for blood.
Karen Russell is one of today’s most celebrated and vital writers—honored in The New Yorker’s list of the twenty best writers under the age of forty, Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists, and the National Book Foundation’s five best writers under the age of thirty-five. Her wondrous new work displays a young writer of superlative originality and invention coming into the full range and scale of her powers.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2013: Karen Russell's first two books (St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves and Swamplandia!) were triumphs of craft and imagination, heralding an exciting new voice in fiction. Her new story collection, Vampires in the Lemon Grove--eight strange tales that might be described as the descendant of Bradbury's The October Country, if that book had been written in the throes of a fever dream--will only expand that reputation. Russell doesn't (or maybe can't) limit herself to any particular genre: The title story leads with a twist on its seemingly undead subject; the prairie Gothic of "Proving Up" draws an apocalyptic landscape worthy of Lovecraft; and "The Graveless Doll of Eric Mutis" examines the dawn of conscience in a thoroughly spooky coming-of-age story worthy of its title. Despite their range, all are tied by Russell's inventive language and her boundless, dark vision. Vampires is at once lush and stark, and above all, thrillingly unnerving. --Jon ForoAbout the Author:

Book Description Knopf:, New York, 2013. Condition: New. First edition, Hardcover, New in dust jacket, The following statement took some thought. . .a great deal of thought. I'm going to make the statement now: Karen Russell is my favorite living writer. Yes, it's true. She set the hook (and ripped out a small portion of my brain) with SAINT LUCY'S HOME FOR GIRLS RAISED BY WOLVES, then she reeled me in and completely gutted me with SWAMPLANDIA. Holy flippin' Toledo! What a writer. VAMPIRES IN THE LEMON GROVE is her new collection. Like everything I've ever read by the woman - it's superb. It's absurd. It's beautiful. It's hysterical. It's occasionally spooky. It's always conversational and yet incredibly lyrical. It is, in short, virtually everything I'm looking for in my literary diet. This woman can turn a phrase, invent a phrase, emote a feeling and a vision with a phrase like nobody else. The only thing I don't like about her is that lots of other people have noticed her too and, loving her work is not in any way a literary eccentricity. I strive so hard to be a literary eccentric. Ah, who cares? Good is good and the best is incomparable. She's off the bloody chart and, even though this short story collection get an initial 75,000 printing, if I have anything to say about it, Random House will blow through those 75,000 like a gale through a fish net. Buy Karen's book. You won't regret it. Seller Inventory # 49757
