This covers most wilderness medical emergencies, from altitude sickness to nitrogen narcosis. It offers sections on first aid for life-threatening problems, minor emergencies, and environmentally specific disorders. A basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology is required. Illustrations are adequate. An index (not seen) and "see" references help in identifying treatments. Coverage outstrips Medicine for Mountaineering (J.A. Wilkerson, ed., the Mountaineers, 1975), the standard in outdoor medicine. Auerbach's pharmacology is more up-to-date, but Wilkerson's explanations of procedures have yet to be surpassed.
