Excerpt from Jesuit Relations of Canada, 1632-1673: A Bibliography
The series of annual letters from the Superiors of the Jesuit missionaries Of New France, published from 1652 to 1673 by the French Province of the Society of Jesus, has acquired with time definite and exclusive designation as The Jesuit Rela tions Convenient and well understood though the designation may be, it is unsatisfactory in the respect that it separates the series from the great body of Jesuit missionary writing to which it is closely related in form and intention. These re ports from the Canadian wilderness are simply a small group set apart by special circumstances of publication from the innumerable communications which, throughfour centuries andahalf, the mission aries of the Jesuit order have been transmitting to headquarters from all parts of the world. The field is white for the harvest was a phrase fre quently on the lips of members of the Society, and in their fervid belief the field was the world. Year by year from India, China and Japan, from Bra zil, Paraguay and Mexico, from Ethiopia and Malabar, from Maryland and from Canada came these detailed reports of the progress of the harvest, of the garnering of souls for the Lord Jesus Christ.
