It is true, finging can be of no benefit without the heart yet it is evident that the heart may °be alarmed, and flirted up to action, by local objects or vocal rounds; and therefore it is that.the voice may be inflrumentally beneficial in finging, praying, and preaching: for it mull not be underflood that any of thofe means are defigned, or fhould be made ufe of to effect, fiir up, alter or benefit God, but the creature, viz. Awaken, flit up, and engage that fpirit or kingdom of God in the creature, until 'the kingdom is got full pofl'eflion of the creature and having both feen and experienced the unfpeakable blefiings that have attended, 1 highly recommend the prafiice of fitzga ing, not only to public afiemblies, but to families and in: dividuals and 'although perfons may fiog loch {hhjefis as they have not experienced without. Mockery, by se knowledging their ignorance of, and groaning after th things they exprefs yet, as I think it far more likely to flir up and engage the heart (efpecially fouls enlightened and groaning for liberty) when they exprefs the (late, groans, and define of their own fouls and therefore it is that I have endeavoured to be to various'in my (objects to be adapted to almofi every capacity, Itation ofllite, or frame ofmind.
And as for the vain exchfe (too often made) for the neglect of (inging, my: neither art nor wont, let me reply, that in the compafs of my own travels, in many focieties and families, where luch excufes have fo for prevailed, that l' have been obliged often almofl (and fometimes wholly) to fiog alone: I have known them after they were pcrfuaded to begin, to make fuch profi'ci'cncy as, to become far greater mailers of hoging than 'mj fell, and that with little help, but praétic'o.
