Grade 2-4 Patti's pet gorilla is a figment of her imagination, invented when she wants to have something special for a show-and-tell. Now all of the students want to meet ``Bob,'' her gorilla. The suspense involves waiting to see if Patti will come up with a real gorilla to satisfy her friends' curiosity, or if she will get up enough courage to tell the truth. The plot is complicated by the fact that other children have seen the ``gorilla'' in her bedroom window. This is a mild tale which deals with the childhood problem of having something ``good'' for show-and-tell. This story line is the book's strength. Its weaknesses include flat characterization and choppy sentences and dialogue. Although this book deals with lying, nowhere in the text does the word appear. Even so, this is an easy chapter book with full-page black-and-white drawings that will have some appeal to children just moving beyond beginning readers. Other books on the subject of lying are either for younger children, such as Ernie's Little Lie (Random, 1983) by Dan Elliott and The True Francine (Little, 1981) by Marc Brown; or older, such as Lizzie Lies a Lot (Delacorte, 1976) by Elizabeth Levy and The Bad Times of Irma Baumlein (Macmillan, 1972) by Carol R.
