Grade 5-7-- When Rayne's seventh-grade Social Living class is required to have a project that will "Impact the World," she decides to try to get her mother to stop smoking. Rayne organizes all kinds of treatments to divert her mother, such as videotapes, self-help groups, and hypnosis. Several times Rayne is discouraged because her mother is sneaking a cigarette, but she vows to complete her project. A subplot of Rayne and her two best friends and their preoccupation with watching a daily soap opera is interwoven into the main story; this is distracting since Robinson doesn't set apart the soap actions, and it seems to have no connection with the central plot. The stop-smoking theme becomes so overpowering that it's drudgery. Intended to be a light-hearted approach to the subject, this book is too heavy-handed. --Bonnie L. Raasch, C. B.
